Description
Original letter from Clarence Hart to his sister Tillie in Saltsburg PA.
Dated March 24, 1863, Hart is writing from "Camp near Bellplain Va"
as a member of the 135th PA Volunteers.
Four page letter contains some fine details on camp life, family matters, etc.
He also mentions Lt. Weaver and L.M. Hawking who are coming home for a short stay.
Clarence Hart died in 1917, a lifelong Saltsburg PA resident. (see obit).
It appears he was very active in civic affairs.
The cover that is included is NOT from the letter in this listing.
This was an original cover from another letter that was addressed TO Clarence Hart.
It does however reveal him as a member of the 135th.
The document is in EX condition with natural filing folds.
Transcription is below. A little difficult to read in some areas.

Dear Sister
I received your letter of the 15
th
this evening and it is uncertain when we can get a chance of answering it out in this country. I will lose no time but answer it right a way. I was very glad to hear of your good health but very sorry to learn that fathers eyes have symptoms of getting sore again. I think that if he would take very good care and not expose himself ??? if he could help that by the next letter I will get the happy news of them being better.
I am very happy to assure you of my good health which I never can be thankful enough for more especially at this time as this is no place for a sick man if the signs indicated a stay in this part of Virginia but now there is all signs of a move. We get orders to pack all the ??? that we can get along without. Well what they want us to take is our ??? coat ??? 1 pairs of trousers 1 extra shirt and pair of socks and our blanket but I will take my portfolio and needle case. I am sending my dress coat and a shirt to Washington to be kept there till we get there. I am sending that shirt that I got from home by the weaver and bought a very good shirt from ??? Murray. All the regiments are turning in their
??? and there is but 10 pack mules to one company. I think from the appearances that we are going to do some marching before long now company are drawing ten days rations to be taking along somehow but I don’t know when. I have a letter from banks last night – he is well and says that they have pretty heavy duty to do. It is raining to night and has the appearance of raining all night. If it does it will make very bad roads to move. I got them ??? but before I got them I had got a pretty good supply of another ??? I got a letter from George Rous wife. They are all well. They said that Uncle William Beck is very bad. They say he has made his will. I heard that ??? was to be married a few days ago. That is five since I came out – a very good business for the ??? that are to work at ??? Lieut Weaver & L.M. Hawking have started to Saltsburg on yesterday. I suppose that Hawking will stay about 6 days at home. Well Tillie I must bring this letter to a close and I want you to excuse bad writing and ill shaped letter as I write it in a great hurry. I want to write a letter to banks tonight ??? I close by assuring you that I will write as often as I possibly can. From your ever affectionate brother
Clarence Hart.
