Description
Fine letter from Almon Wellman, a member of the NY 10th Heavy Artillery.
Dated Jan 18, 1863, Cpl Wellman is writing from Fort Baker in Washington home to his sister Lucy in Osceola NY.
Although there is not specific Civil War content, Almon does mention the names of a couple of soldiers,
the Hospital, and some various duties he performs. There is much family content.
He mentions his wife Frances, sister Miranda, George, and his father.
Wellman was a lifelong resident of Osceola, and a carpenter before and after the war.
The original cover is included and has a great embossed patriotic image of General McClellan.
The letter is in EX condition for a paper item this old,
and the original cover is included with the original stamp and a fine Washington DC cancel.
The cover was opened from the left
and does have an old tape repair on the border.
I have transcribed the letter below, and was able to decipher about 98%.
I did correct spelling in some cases.

Dear Sister
I received your letter night before last and I was very glad to hear from you and to hear that you was all well. As to me I am very well. I have got your ring don(e) and I shal send it to you and I think of sending you a (bone) ring the next letter if I get time to make it. I (w)rote a letter to Frances last night and I sent her a (bone) ring and I sent George one to and I got a letter a few days ago from Maranda and she feels very bad about me and she sent me eight post stamps and she sent me twenty five
(page 2)
(cents) of money and she was a going to send me a box if she could send it to the cases but she did not get a chance to send it. I suppose that box that you are going to send will get here before this letter gets to you. I ?? told you to send it by express and the (freight) must be paid and take a (receipt) and the (receipt) sent to me and I could take the (receipt) and go and get the box without any trouble but if you don’t send the (receipt) I can get it but it is more trouble. It is Sunday today and I have been a mending my (clothes) and I changed them and I feel better. I have had to work most every Sunday
(page 3)
Since I have got well and today I would not do anything even to go on inspection and they did not like that but I don’t care whether they do or not. I must make Maranda a bone ring and send it to her. My eyes is some sore yet and it bothers me to see to make rings. You wanted to hear about Thom Ecklos and I went to the hospital yesterday and saw him and he is getting some better. He has not had the small pox he has had the fever and the fever has left him but he is very poor and weak he will probably have to stay there for three or four weeks yet the rest of the boys are all well as usual
(page 4)
Adelbert Sales is here at Washington and he is going to come and see us. I will try and get time to make you a bone ring as soon as I can and I shall make a nice one and you may (wear) it when you dress up. You must tell our folks that I should like to see them. Tell father that if he was where I could see him I would give him (soldiers) ??? to last him as long as he lived. I should like to see you all very much but I can’t. I must come to a close so good by all from your Brother. Almon Wellman
