    Description

Private  Fredom Sanborn served with the notable 12th New Hampshire 1862-64, surviving the terrible battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The 12th serving with the 3rd Corp saw heavy combat at the latter battle and he was initially reported as MIA. He served alongside his cousin Wesley Leighton who was killed in the battle. The History of the 12th NH Volunteers by Asa Bartlett  says, of Cousin Leighton, "he fought and fell by the side of "Freeman (sp) Sanborn" who was wounded in the throat in the battle". Then family history also reports Fredom was wounded in the battle. He recovered and continued with his comrades until the following year when he was discharged for disability.
An Original Civil War Letter from Freedom Sanborn to his parents, with an ornate 12th New Hampshire Regiment logo, dated Jan 10, 1863, in "Camp near Falmouth where the unit had just seen action, reporting his comrades have just received apples, sweetcakes and donuts  but none for him, says Uncle Mose had better send some for Wes (Cousin Wesley Leighton of H Company, KIA Gettysburg) and him as soon as possible,  as well as brown bread from the oven, "we eat the meanest pork ever put in a pork barrel, soft and oily & fried in a pan like mush, makes me sick every time , every day with hard tack", would like baked beans and fresh beef & rice. He goes to meeting 2 times a week and Chaplain visits him. General Burnside visited the 9th Corp, our regiment had only 300 men due to sickness and deaths. Signed simply "Freedom" as were many of his letters.   Comes w service info: Private Sanborn , a native of Sanbornton, NH only survived the war to 1873 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Sanbornton.
