    Description

    Civil War Soldier's letter, 4 pgs., approx. 4-3/4" x 8", datelined
"Camp Burnside, Red House, Warren Rifles, Harlem, December 14th/ 61"
    , written on
    patriotic stationery
, with a red & blue illustration of an eagle, flag and fancy star & shield design, with "NOT A STAR MUST FALL".
A scarce early War-date letter from a soldier in the "Warren Rifles" - the 95th NY Infantry, which was organized in New York City beginning in Nov. 1861, and was headquartered during its organization at the Red House in Harlem, NY. (at the end of this description, I've copied the text of a newspaper clipping I found online about the Warren Rifles' stay in Harlem).
Great content, re trying to get more men for the Regiment, and urging his friend to leave the regiment he is currently in, and join the Warren Rifles, and to bring others with him. To entice him, he writes in detail of the great food they get, of how great their Captain is, (he'll even get you tobacco), and more.
    Includes:
    "Friend Daniel W. Aldrich,
I send you these few lines today, as I have not had any time to do so before, because I'm around the city the whole day long, trying to get recruits to join my Regiment, and Daniel, I would like for you and Carr and Scotty of Comp. G, 1st Infty to join us, and if you are willing, you can come off on Monday night next, for I'm coming out with a small boat between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock to get some of the men that I have been speaking to. So if you are willing to come, you can get off at the same time the others do. They are all going to join Capt. James R. Quick's company - it is com. E, for it is the same comp. that I belong to and so will you if you are willing to come, for Proudfoot and Jersey belong to the same, and three others.
Daniel, we get the very best of rations, for it is none of your fat pork, dry bread and dish water for coffee. For Breakfast we get our Beefsteaks and Mutton chops, bread and butter, and the very best of Coffee with mile also. For dinner, Roast beef and Roast mutton, dome very nice soup, potatoes mashed and baked. For supper, Roast Beef, bread and butter with a bowl of tea and as much as you want. You may think, Aldrich, that I'm telling you a falsehood to try and get you over, and if you will come over, and do not find it just as I say, you need not stop, though you know yourself that I would not tell you a lie, for when I tell anyone anything, they will always find it just as I'm telling you. Also, the Capt. will find you in tobacco or anything else that you want, for he is the best Capt. in this regiment. He always looks after his men, and sees that they are treated right and that they are not imposed upon by any of the officers or men. The Lieut. is another fine man and would like for you and those two men to join us, for I have been speaking to him and the Capt. about the three of you. So come up by Monday night and join your friends from the Islands.
    John Heimsoath
    and Alpheus P. Proudfoot
    Capt. Jas. R. Quick
Lt. H.B. Hall of Company C, Warren Rifles, No. 47 - 47-1/2 Broadway. Bounty of 0 and one hundred sixty acres of land.
We will land at the grave yards and I would like for you to meet us there at the time mentioned on the other page. Give my best respect to Sergt. Gurtick, but do not let him know anything about this, though I would like for you to speak to some of the men in the Battalion and see if you can get some of them to leave with you."
    Fine.
