Description
Civil War Letter & EnvelopeThe soldier writing the letter (
Hiram D. Kellogg)
could have been either Confederate or Union because he was treated at two different hospitals during the war: first at Chatanooga, TN and Evansville, IN. He mentions being in a Field Hosptial in Chattanooga before getting transferred to Indiana. It is possible that he was injured in the Battle of Chickamauga in September of 1863 but he does not mention when he was injured.

Friend Carrie
I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines in answer to you last letter received by me when I was in the Field Hospital at Chattanooga.
The reason that I have not answered it before is that I have not been able to write of any account and even now I don’t know as I (?) can write it so you can read it for I have to lie in my bed all of the time even writing this letter. I have to lie on my back in bed and my right arm I have no use of at all. I have the use of my hand and that is all and that is very weak.
My arm has been very painful for the last three or four weeks but it is getting better now and I am in hopes I will be able to go home before long.
I suppose you have good sleighing at (?) I wish I were there and able to enjoy it. I always delighted to sleighride.
Another Christmas and New Year has passed which makes the third one since I left home. I did not expect to be gone half as long as I have.
The war still continues and is like to for some time yet there will be a chance for a good many more men to enlist and try their hand at Soldiering.
I must tell you that I stayed three weeks time very pleasantly with my Father’s company at Nashville.
I will probably remain there through the winter, I don’t think of any news(?) to (?) it is we are having quite cold weather so I will close(?).
How is Adelie(?) give my best respects to her.
This from your Friend as ever
