    Description

Civil War soldier's letter, 3 pgs., approx. 5-1/8" x 8-1/4", dated at Camp Convalescent, Jan. 7, 1864, from Andrew (I can't make out his last name), to his mother.
Camp Convalescent was a Union Army Hospital Camp for soldiers recovering from wounds and illness, with the aim of recovering so as to rejoin their regiments. It was located in Fairfax Co., Va., near Alexandria.
    Good content.
    Includes (spelling corrected):
    "Dear Mother,
I'll take this opportunity to answer your welcome letter, which I received yesterday. It found me well as common. We are having pretty good winter weather here now. There is about five inches of snow and it is as cold as I ever saw it in Delaware County...I just received a letter from Arthur. He is well and he says he is going to come to this camp. I hope he will, for I expect to have to stay here all winter.
They are putting every man into the Invalid Corps that is not able to go to his regiment, and they have examined me three times and now they have put me on guard here at this camp. I don't know how long I shall be on guard here.
You wanted to know whether I had the ague yet or not. I have had only one shake up since I left. I might have stayed there on the Island if I had wanted to, but I had rather be here by half.
You wanted to know if we had anything good for Christmas. We had roast turkeys and plum pudding...We don't get very good grub here. There is over a hundred express boxes come here to this Camp in a week...Our regiment has enlisted...for three years more, but I don't know whether any of our men has or not, and them that would not enlist were put into the124th NY, so that is the regiment I shall have to go into when I go back..."
    Small light stains. Fine.
