Description
Civil War soldier's letter, 2 pgs, approx. 5" x 8", datelined"Camp on the border of Georgetown, Apr. 30, 1865"
, (Washington, D.C.), from A.B. Bemis, Co. K, 57th Mass. Vol. Infantry, to Army Surgeon A. Van Derveer.
The writer of this letter, Amasa B. Bemis, was a 35 year old Blacksmith from Chester, Mass. when he was mustered into Co. K, 57th Mass. Infantry on Apr. 6, 1864. He was mustered out on July 30, 1865. Died at age 54 in Springfield, Mass. in1883.
Good content regarding a wounded soldier who had been under the Surgeon's care and was since transferred to another hospital, telling the doctor to send the "ball and pieces of bone" to the soldier's mother at Huntington, Mass, so that he will be sure to get them.
Includes (spelling corrected):
"Sir,
In answer to your letter bearing date Apr. 24th, 65, I am sorry to say that I have not seen him since he left your hospital. I got a pass the next day after I saw you and went to City Point. He had been sent from there to the Gen. Hospital, Washington, D.C.. I have received two letters from him. I wrote to him one week ago, don't get any answer. I think he has been transferred to some other Hospital. He was getting along very well. He has had 5 pieces more bones taken out. In regard to the Ball and pieces of Bones that you have got, I think the best to send them to Betsey Bemis, Huntington, Mass., his Mother, then he will sure and get them.
There isn't any passes given now in this Brigade for the reason I know not. It is the talk here so were going home. If you send those pieces, drop me a line and oblige
Yours truly,
A. B. Bemis
