"Dear Uncle and Aunt,
Your very kind letter came to hand the other day while on the march from Richmond to this place. I was glad to hear from you and Aunt Mary and to hear that you was well. As for myself, I have got so I weigh 180 lbs now and tough as a rat.
Well Uncle, we have had a hard march from Raleigh to this place. We have marched over 300 miles. What do you think of that. We got here day before yesterday, and I have seen Freling, and James and all of them boys around and saw Orville Hill, and Harris, and Joe Casey, and Philanson Heath too; he belongs to the 17th Corps, 16th Iowa, Co. F. Philanson was down to see me last night and we had a long talk about matters and things. Philanson is fat and tough as a buck. Freling and James is all right now. I have seen them two days running.
What do you think about the war now. What do you think about us coming home now right off. Well Uncle, it is Sunday, and a rainy day at that....
I would like to have you to send me five dollars in Green Backs if you can, for I have not got the first cent in money now. We will have some money some time, but we don't know when. When I get my pay, I will send it to you soon as we are paid. If you can't spare it, you need not send it to me...
