You are purchasing the exact covers shown in the photographs.
33 Letters addressed to prominent tobacco merchant Daniel K. Stewart who left Richmond with his sons at the outbreak of the civil war to smuggle southern tobacco northward from Tennessee to New York.
Some of the covers’ docketing reference huge quantities of tobacco and money.
Some of the covers reference the writer in Tennessee wanting a trunk sent from New York with certain items that apparently will be re-sold.
All letters are addressed to Daniel K. Stewart in New York or in Louisville.
The majority are from his son Bryan Stewart.
All are extensively docketed with what the now-gone letters contained.
The Daniel K. Stewart ante-bellum correspondence from/to Richmond dealing with tobacco is well know, but this is the first time I have seen these types of civil war covers.
All of these letters are U65-type envelopes.
All are pictured in the first two photographs.
**All of these envelopes appear to have been contemporaneously folded in a way to make them smaller.
I can tell this because the docketing goes to the edge of the new fold.
My theory is that these were contained in a larger envelope along with other envelopes—but that is a theory.
I think my theory is correct, but I cannot prove it.
Perhaps you have a different theory about why these envelopes were made smaller to fit in something else.
This group of 33 covers was purchased by a collector in the 1940s and mounted them on old pages.
I have removed them from the old pages.
This group does not appear to be recorded in any way and is ripe for study.
Some of the envelopes were up-rated with additional stamps.
The stamps are gone, having been soaked off with minimal damage.
As many individuals as I can are pictured in later photographs.
The vast majority are postmarked Clarksville, Tennessee but there are some Louisvilles, two Kentucky towns and one Norfolk, Va.
There is often a delay in the postmark date to docketed dates of receipts compared to other times when there is no delay.
Several docketings make reference to the Confederacy.
One appears to have pencil “examination markings.”
A few reference staggering sums of money and large quantities of “Hhds” (Hogsheads) of tobacco.
There is no order to the way the covers in photos #3 to #12 were place, perhaps I should have put them in some order, but I could not figure out a way to order them.
I did do the following chart with information about each cover.
For the vast majority, I did not transcribe all docketing.
Here is a chart I did to provide some information about the covers.  Only covers #1 - 27 are photographed in photos #3-12:
