    Description

    The 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers was a notable combat unit, organized in Philadelphia and serving under Colonel George McLean with the First Corp. An Original Civil War letter from Private William W Otto, 88th PVI to his wife Charlotte, wriiten at Fairfax Seminary Hospital, Virginia,  August 2 1862, w handsome illus of a US shield and Corp badges: Private Otto writes  that he will be discharged soon , "please be of good heart", he hopes his name will soon be in the Discharge Book, begs her to do the best she can for now, hopes to bring some money home, tell the boys and Smallwood I will be home soon , my love to you and our children. Fairfax Seminary Hospital was  the Episcopal Seminary of Virginia on Seminary Hill and the chief Army of the Potomac Hospital in 1862 3pp 8 x 5" ink, w color illus. Age stains, small holes, edge wear, Overall VG.  Comes w service info- Private Otto served 1 1/2 years before being discharged for disability a week after he writes this letter.   Port Providence was a village along the Schuylkill Canal, Montgomery County, Pa.
