Civil War letter dated Aug 1st 1863 from Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Ct Vols Sherman Division
Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Reg Company A was from Meriden Ct and was mustered in on Sept 5, 1861
Letter is 4 pages long and is written from Hilton Head South Carolina
Writing to his brother from St Helena
Some excerps from the letter with some comments agains the Northern leaders are
I suppose you heard all about the attack on Charleston and how our boys were cut up in the charge
over batteries. There were only 4 Cos od our Regt there s you have no doubt seen by the news south I sent you
Rest are at st Augustine Fla out of 180 only about 8 returne among the killed as near as we can get it are
Marshall Belden and perhaps Sanderson also Corp oliver Sellin is reported dead and another report
says he is a prisoner and wounded. OPuyr Chaplin says that he is killed poor fellow he was badly wounded
at James island last year and if he had been rewarded for his bravery but as it is he is a poor man's Sam and
consequensely of no account and only a dog. in the eyes of some of our Damed Officers
He is and always has been a Corporal until lately he was act Sergt he was as fine a fellow as there was in
the Co or Regt and I hope he will turn out all right yet we has others thet we can spare and not mis them
And some that had no right to be Sergt before him but when you have a mean curse for an Officer good chaps
like him are cast out & I d---d foolput in his place
One thing looks good in the late fight ouot Capt is missing and it is reported that he is killed but fear it ain't so for we
should miss him over the lest one of our wounded says that he knows Sellen is a prisoner another says he is all right the paper report him missing
Belden dead also Sanderson but Sanderson I hope to believe is all right
I am at St Helena Island near Hilton Head have not been to Charlston was left back with 25 others sick
This is the first time I ever was left behind Luckey Boy this time I have been in every engagement the the Reg or Co
ever was till this time. I feel perfectly satisfied that I was not there
