Description
This is a pretty incredible find! This is a letter, on Union stationery with the cachet on the top, from a member of the 21st Massachusetts Volunteers to his sister. The 21st Massachusetts was on picket duty at Annapolis, Maryland at the time, and the letter is dated November 19, 1861.The 4-page letter is signed L. E. S., and we believe that the writer is Private Luther E. Stewart (1832-1914). Stewart was wounded in the face at Antietam in 1862 and returned to his unit. At Cold Harbor in 1864 he was shot in the foot, which resulted in the amputation of his left leg. After a long hospitalization, he was mustered out in 1865.
If you Google "Luther E Stewart 21st Massachusetts" the first result is another letter, written by him two years later, and we believe the writer is the same.
The letter measures 8 inches by 5 inches.
