    Description

    The 51st Massachusetts Volunteers took part in the Goldsboro North Carolina Expedition in 1862- 1863 including the battles of Whitehall and of Goldsboro, and then was assigned to duty at Evans Mills, on the Trent River near New Bern. An original Civil War letter from Sergeant Gus B Williams of Blackstone, Massachusetts at  Evans Mills ( on Bryce's Creek, near Newbern, North Carolina) written April 26,  1863, sends his wife money for their anniversary  & their common  birthday present, he is lame at present, unable to walk also suffers from deafness, but writes and plays checkers with comrades, Captain has relieved him from leading picket duties, many here are sick and lame, etc. He then writes a second sheet at 10 PM,
    The Captain sometimes takes the men's place on picket to allow them sleep, he would be in great trouble if found out, It is a pleasant sabbath, we sing a great deal , read the Bible, I read Colonel Kilpatrick's Raid news aloud to the boys, Genl Hooker may try again but will not succeed with Hallack in the Field, Copperhead Vallindgham is arrested as should all traitors be,  news of Mrs Stantons Womens Rights Meeting, etc.  A  tender & loving letter, he treasures their anniversary of their years of wedded life, though their hearts beat from afar their married love remains faithful. The letter is simply signed "Your Husband". 6pp 8 x 5" ink.
    The letter is overwritten to save paper but legible, a common soldier practice. Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. Comes w service info. Postwar Sergeant Williams was a Member of GAR Post # 22 (Major E. F. Fletcher) at Milford, MA. The letter was part of his estate that in recent years was auctioned including his other letters and personal effects.
