    Description

    Company C of the 12th Iowa was a notable Civil War unit, composed mostly of Upper Iowa University students. The regiment had an with extensive combat history including the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee where the men fought until surrounded in the Hornet's Nest, helping delay the Confederate advance to provide Grant time for a counterattack. An original Civil War letter from Erwin Comstock of C Company, 12th Iowa , at Benton Barracks, St Louis Missouri, where he was awaiting the regiment's Shiloh POW exchange, Feb 25, 1862, to comrade Lt George Throop with news of comrades, the exchange of the 12th at Benton, his attempt at awol, furlough home to Iowa, General Tuttle attempts to get the 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa into a brigade, , , expecting Rebel General Churchill and rebs taken at Arkansas Post, he and comrades are in good spirits and "boys will be boys" etc. 4pp 8 x 11" ink. Comes w service info. Private Comstock, a native of Fayette, Iowa served 1861-65 served with the 12th, and wrote his story of the War and life as a POW   titled "Soldiering in the Sixties". Comstock was exchanged in 1862 and  captured again at Jackson , Mississippi and his antics and attempt at escape  are also colorfully recounted in the book 'University Recruits:"  Then letter comes with the postal cover addressed to "Sergt George Throop, Chicago Mercantile Battery Gen. Sherman's Army Brig Gen A.J. Smith's Division Via Cairo".
    The recipient, Sergeant Throop was killed in action at Sabine Crossroads (Battle of Mansfield) , Louisiana the next year. Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. The cover has edge tears with stamp removed.
