Dear father and mother and brother and sister,
I take this present opportunity of writing these few lines to let you know that I am well, hoping this may find you the same.  I received your letter the day before yesterday and was very glad to hear from you.  It has rained and snowed all last night and is doing the same yet.  You said that I should send you some money if I could.  I have not got it or I should send it with the greatest of pleasure.  If we get paid I will send you some of it.  I don’t know how soon we will get paid.  There is some of our boys out on picket.  As there is nothing going on that I can tell you.  So I hope you will excuse me for not writing a long letter.  I will remain your son, truly.

    Direct as you did before
