Description
An original Civil War letter including the cover. It looks like it is dated Green Castle Ind Apr. 17 1865. This letter makes reference to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Some of the writing is hard to read in one area it looks like it says,..........yesterday (sunday) was the most gloomy day i ever experienced in any country more sad countenances more solemn expressions and more solemn performances than I ever witnessed before. All on account of our national calamity. You & I have both see the day that we would be glad to see the presidential chair vacated & we would not much care how but times have been changing since & I dont think either of us would wish it now at least in the manner it was by the assassin. Friday was a great day of jubile & saturday a day of great mourning. Sunday there was an address by Rev Dr Fisk in the coledge lot and a possession formed of Masons Odd fellows coledge boys four churches & citizens which took 1/2 hour to pass a given point with muffled drum & bells todling with muffled.....& flags dressed in runnin & it was the most solemn sight I ever witnessed..............The letter has wear and stain marks, there is a tear on a fold. The cover has some wear.
