Description
Civil War LetterCivil War Letter written by Joseph W. Hodgdon of Company L, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. See scan for full typewritten transcription. The letter was written August 27, 1864 "9 miles from Petersburg." He describes fighting in "hard fought battles" on the north side of James River, trying to hold their position behind breastworks, they could hear rebels calling out encouraging them to surrender, 15 in their regiment killed along the Weldon Railroad and more. A great letter !
