    Description

    CIVIL WAR LETTER
CIVIL WAR LETTER - Written by Soldier in 2nd Iowa Infantry
This Civil War soldier letter was written by William L. Cady (1833-1901), the orphaned son of Charles Cady (1807-1845) and Mary Holman (1806-1847). He wrote to his brother, Thomas Haynes Cady (1838-1910) while William was serving in
    Co. D, 2nd Iowa Infantry
    during the Civil War.
William enlisted at Burlington on 4 May 1861 and mustered into the regiment on 27 May 1861. He was wounded slightly in the Battle of Fort Donelson on 15 February 1862. He mustered out of the regiment on 18 December 1863 but less than a week later, he reenlisted in the same regiment. He was mustered out for a second time in July 1865.
After the war, William returned to Iowa where he worked as a blacksmith. In 1900, just prior to his death, William was residing in the Iowa Soldiers Home in Linn, Marshall county, Iowa. He was divorced.

    Dear Brother & Sister,
I received your kind letter and was glad to hear that you was all well and more pleased to hear that you got the money that I sent to you for I was most all the time in a sweat about it. I thought that it would get there for some of the boys sent money home and it never got there so I was thinking that my money wouldn’t get there so now I am alright. So you can see that these few lines leaves me all well and in good health.
The regiment is stationed at this place—so called Corinth—two miles south in the timber. We are stationed at this place most all summer, so that’s what the Col. [James] Baker says. The order came into camp last night to hold the regiment in readiness to march for St. Louis, Mo., but I don’t believe it for we are stationed here for the summer.
When I got your letter this morning, I got a letter from John Roberts. He is well and all the family is well.
We are cleaning the drill ground for the troops to drill on that comes from the North.
I got a letter from Jack and one from Charles Cady. They was well. John Lindy is well and John Price the same. They send their best respects to you all.
The house that I am in is built of bushes and leaves of small trees and covered with clapboards from an old stable so the rain can’t come in onto me. It is a nice place [but] it is cold. We have drill ad Dress Parade in the morning drill. In the afternoon the same but no Dress Parade. We have warm bread at every meal and coffee and sometimes ham.
I shall bring my letter to a close at the present time for it is getting towards dinner time for it won’t pay to lose my dinner these war times. You can give Mary Jane some of that money—that is, if you can spare it—and oblige me. Give my best respects to Mary Jane and George and the children and I send my love to you all. So no more at present time. Yours remain, — W. L. Cady, Co. D, 2nd Iowa Infantry Regt., Camp Montgomery, Corinth, Miss.
