    Description
    Civil War Letter
from a soldier stationed at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac 1
    st
Corp in Pennsylvania to his father, March 2, 1863, 3 pages, about 7 ¾ by 9 ¾ inches, in fair shape as it has a tear along a fold that extends 7 inches from the top of each page.  Among the highlights in the long letter, the soldier, named John, talks about activities in the camp and mentions that he and others filled out their Pay Rolls but he still has not been paid the .25 he is owed.  He tells his father that "I believe Gen. McClellen truly said 'that a campaign in Virginia' made in the winter would never be successful".  Then he says that Rosengarten was promoted to Ordinance Officer because of his bravery at Fredericksburg. "I don't want to speak by any means against Rosengarten, he is a very nice man but a
    Jew
    is a
    Jew
all the world over, and the traces of the old race are still to be found in him."    Later he says "We are still guarding some of the prisoners captured on the Late Raid down the ? between the Pomtomac & Rappahannick rivers".  Overall, this is quite an interesting letter written by an insightful soldier who still held anti-semitic beliefs.
