    Description

    Civil War Letter
Civil War Letter - Written by Soldier in Company "E" of the 123rd New York Infantry
This Civil War soldier letter was written by Seth Cooley Carey (1838-1919) who enlisted in August 1862 and was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E, 123rd New York Infantry on 4 September 1862. He was promoted to 1st Leitenenant in November 1863 as as Adjutant on 29 March 1864. He was wounded in the fighting at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, on 20 July 1864 and mustered out with the regiment near Washington D. C. on 8 June 1865.
The 123rd New York Infantry began their service in the Eastern Theatre but in the fall of 1863 they were transferred to the Army of the Cumberland and eventually participated with Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Campaign of the Carolinas.
Seth was the son of John and Catherine (Cooley) Carey of Hebron, New York. He wrote the letters to his friend, Methodist clergyman John Milton Webster (1828-1914), the son of Orrin Hollister Webster (1800-1862) and Theda Streeter (1802-1872). Webster was married to Chloe Mary Barney (1832-1922) in 1853.

    Bro. Webster,
Your kind note of the 14th reached me two days ago. It was pleasant to hear from my native place once more, though I shall disagree with you in regard to the idea that all the news is at this end of the line. When we are compelled to sleep on the ground, eat on the ground, write sitting on the ground, with marches by night and marches by day, and fights and skirmishes thrown in as often as semi-occasionally, it will take considerable argument to convince me that the principal portion of the writing is to be done at this end of the line. I do not now recollect when I wrote you last, so I cannot be very precise about dates and if I tell the same thing twice over, why you will make all due allowances for it.
For more than a month we have hardly been out of long rifle range of the enemy. Every week there are more or less wounded by their bullets. A week ago today we lost 4 killed, 28 wounded & 14 missing in an engagement on this ground we now occupy. Our whole regiment was thrown out as skirmishers and advanced about a mile, driving the enemy before us. About 3 p.m, the enemy advanced on our skirmish line which after a few moments was compelled to fall back to our main line, before the double line of battle of the enemy. They found it too [hot] a place to stay in and fell back and next morning our line of works was on the skirmish line of the day before. Lt. Quinn of Ft. Ann was severely wounded in the face.
We are on the Marietta and Atlanta turnpike about 4 miles south of Marietta.
Much obliged for that little document you enclosed. I hope I am not forgotten though it [seems] sometimes if I was remembered I would receive a letter oftener than I do.
Regards to all. Your friend, — Seth C. Carey
