Description
A CIVIL WAR LETTER WRITTEN BY A UNION SOLDIER TO HIS BROTHER IN LAW AND SISTERFORT MOSBY, SEPTEMBER 3RD
approximately 8 inches high
"I take my pen in hand to let you know how I am getting along. I am well at this time and I hope that you are the same. Now Oliver I must tell you about the war here. It looks hard here. Nothing but bugs and worms here and we are in a hard way here. The Rebels are driving our men back again. General Sigel and General Porter their best force is here. They came here this morning. They were going to Washington. A regiment of them had a fight three miles from our camp with the guerillas. Three of our men was shot..... Oliver we are in between three forts and I think the rebels will have a hard road to travel as long as the 130 is here for we will make Jackson sing. We are gay and hoping here. We had to leave our camp last night again. We fell back two hundred yards, back on a hill, ready for a fight. Oliver I must tell you about us. We got into good lines. WE must cut most every day for the forts. I don't think it is right"
