Description
CIVIL WAR LETTERAutograph letter signed, April 9th, 1864, by John Allen,
postmarked in Port Royal, S.C., 4 pages on a folded letter sheet.
He writes about family and a recent death, and of his role as
Regiment Baker, in part "…I see that a good many of the boys
have enlisted, and some have re-enlisted for the bounty. I hope
they will do well, but Uncle Sam has not got green backs enough
to re-enlist John Allen. I do not dislike soldiering, but I dislike
red tape. There is too much of it in this army…".
