CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC ENVELOPE ~ Uncle Sam FishingColored ~ RARE! ~ Unused ~ Perfect Condition
CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC ENVELOPE ~ Unused.
This buff 6" x 3½" envelope printed by Berlin and Jones dates from 1861. It is hand colored hand-colored and depicts Uncle Sam fishing with an American flag and using a cannon as bait to catch Southern "secession" fish. Envelope is slightly toned, especially along glue lines, but in remarkably excellent condition for its age.
The Berlin & Jones Company dates back to 1843 when a Mr Pierson commenced the manufacture of envelopes, by a hand-process, using little or no machinery. In 1847, Mr Jacob Berlin, a man of sagacity and enterprise, purchased the little establishment of Mr. Pierson, and commenced the manufacture of envelopes on a larger scale at 180 Fulton St, New York. Still the business did not prosper, and after a fair trial of a few months Mr. Berlin was ready to retire, discouraged. As he could not find a purchaser he had to keep his hands and machinery employed. A reward soon came. The apathetic public and new Government post office department began to call for envelopes for mail uses, but unfortunately Mr. Berlin was unable to supply the demand.
So in 1853 Mr. Berlin sold his entire business to Messrs. Wm. G. West and Henry C. Berlin, and retired. Under its new management the firm expanded like gangbusters and eventually built a large six story building in the rear of No. 120 William street, New York, where the manufacture and sale were prosecuted with energy and success. In 1856 Mr. West retired, and the firm of Berlin & Jones was formed. By the late 1850s, about 100 Berlin & Jones employees would fold and complete around 200,000 envelopes per day.
In addition to envelopes of many shapes and sizes made of many different materials, they started producing envelopes with return addresses and various commercial designs on them. Around 1860, along with Magnus, D Murphy's Son, and others they started producing Civil War Patriotic (North) caricature designs in black on buff envelopes and it seems that people and enterprising entrepreneurs started coloring them.
