    Description

Civil War US Navy letter from James Watts, U.S.Steamer Flag, blockading of Charleston S. C. Oct 28, 1862, 1-3/4 big pages to his sister in Philadelphia PA, had to do two scans for first page, comes with a wonderful cover, DUE 3 marking, partial Port Royal SC circular date stamp,  other great features noted later in this listing.
James tells a very colorful and vivid story about having two teeth extracted on board ship by an assistant surgeon.  First wants to know if his brother Jacob is reenlisting in the Marines.    Read the teeth extraction detail on the complete transcript. Later in his letter, he says he wants to put in a Democratic president in the next, tired of black abolitionism and  Republicanism.     Says he is too much of  Negro hater (a sad time in our history).
Envelope has a manscript "Ship's Letter", DUE 3, partial Port Royal S.C. circular date stamp.   On back flap is a wonderful docket of an eagle, appears to be sitting on eggs), holding a patriotic shield.   Manuscript docket on front is very uncommon and quite rare.
    Wonderful combination
