    Description

    Lorenzo Calkins of Ellicottville, New York served 4 years with the 105th and 94th NY Volunteers. An Original Civil War letter from Private Calkins "Camp of the 94th Rgt USA, June 15, 65"  to his wife , regrets he knows no more about when he will be discharged than he did in his last letter, he sends her all his encouragement and hope to get his discharge soon, I can get a furlough for 20 days but then will have to stay in the Army longer, and expects he will see his " papers with the spread eagle"(discharge) soon. I  intend to keep up good courage and trust in providence that this wide war end as it will and we be free and happy. I send my love and respects to you and the children. LD Calkins 94th Regt, Pioneer in Chief".
    3pp ink,8 x 5"  with logo in banner "US Christian Commission" .  The cover is addressed to his wife, with the cover ink stamped "Due 3" and  overwritten in ink "soldiers letter". The reverse side penned  in his hand proclaims  "No money for postage stamps 4 months pay due War to end and in the field so keep on smoking us". (The)  "shoulder straps (officers) they pay Brandy and Cigars". Edge cuts, age stains, Overall VG.
    Comes w service info- Private Calkins served 4 years, inc all the battles of the Army of the Potomac, with the 105th and 94th seeing heavy fighting at Antietam, 2nd Manassas, Fredericksburg,  Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and at Five Forks. He and his  regiment had the dubious distinction of being the last unit of the Army of the Potomac to be mustered out.
