    Description

    Brothers Edson and Philo Emery of Tunbridge, Vermont, enlisted in 1861 for 3 years with the 2nd Vermont of the famous Vermont Brigade. Both were wounded art the Battle of the Wilderness, where the regiment suffered heavily;  Philo died of his wounds.  An Original Civil War letter from Edson Emery at Brandy Station, Virginia, December 27, 1863 to their brother. He and Philo have sent money home for stockings and gloves, Edson proudly praises their fine winter quarters, "probably the best camp in the Army",  He reports  that 2 men of the Vermont Brigade have been shot for desertion , one from their regiment and one from the 5th Vermont. He also reports  3 comrades have re-enlisted  for 3 more years  and will get a 2 bounty and 30 day furlough. "I hardly think I will re-enlist- the war aint played out yet, We have less that 6 months to serve'. "It is no fool, of a job to enlist for 3 more years.  "I hear the 5tth Vermont are going home as a regiment under the new order of enlisting and Wilbur Fisk with the rest of the veterans.  Captain Bixby (also KIA Wilderness) is home on furlough and names other  re--enlisted comrades- Dennis Dunham and Albert Rust (also died of wounds, Wilderness) . 3pp ink, 8 x 5", signed "Truly yours- Edson Emery Co.
