Description
Civil War soldier letter, Luciliers Pyles (142nd Illinois), Camp White Station, TN,8-28-64, envelope addressed to his mother, letter could be to her or perhaps a sister, 4 pages plus packed, cover franked with #65, addressed to Mrs Mary L. Pyles, Sparta, Ills, letter i in blue ink.
The excitement continued till yesterday, have not had much rest but have not killed a man, neither have we killed a reb, the other night our pickets kept firing all night, all available men were called into our battle line, there are only about 10-12 hundred fit for duty, we were looking for an attack from Forrest, 2500 all cavalry, but it never came, what our pickets were firing at it hard to tell, maybe some kind of panic.
I was on picket last night, two shots were fired by the vedettes (mounted cavalry), they were never returned and I beileve all the rebs around us were in the imagination, reports say Smith's troops are on the way back, if that is true, it will not be long before we have a large force here, our regiment drew clothes last Friday, I got a shirt and pair of pants more on this.
Was not feeling well, got some buttermilk from a woman, made me feel first rate, there was preaching today but I did not go, will try to go to prayer meeting tonight, mentions hogs, got a ring for Will but do not want to send as it might get broke, got the papers you sent, Mr. Robbison's sermons first rate, get the Sparta news now, a woman came all the way from Sparta to see her son, but alas he was buried two days before she got here.
More good content, letter comes with a full transcript.
