Description

Civil War soldier letter, Robert Stewart, 2nd Lt. 72nd PA Vols, Camp near Falmough, (VA), Jan 24, 1863, to his brother, heavily rants for his brother about his inability to obtain a furlough, the officials are pirates in Washington and do not honor their oaths, (some unflattering language ), has nothing good to say about (Charles) Sumner, a senator from Massachusetts.
Is going to try and get a sutler to buy him a sword and belt and clothing, but charges 3 times his cost, Washington prices, when on duty has to borrow a sword and does not want to continue doing this, will be about to get it on credit until he gets first pay as 2nd Lt, says his old chum, Sut Jones (Sutton Jones, 72nd Pa), was killed at Gettysburg, had been promoted to Lt.
Whole army moved for about 3 days in rain and mud and camp back to their camps, our Corps de Armee did not move and was glad of it, for some of our artillery will not be able to get out of the mud for a month, rebs painted on a board on the other side of the river that Burnside was stuck in the mud, talks of McClellen generals defeating Pope at Manassas, more excellent content.
Comes with a full transcript. Nearly 3 big pages in easy to read pencil.  A great letter!
