Description

Colonel William H. Noble, brevetted a Brigadier General in the Civil War, commander of the 17th Connecticut Infantry, Autograph Letter Signed to this wife, 5 pages, 1 July 1863, from Washington where he was convalescing from wounds received at Chancellorsville Noble writes while his regiment is fighting on the 1st day of Gettysburg, difficult hand to read, he mentions his regiment, charges against his pay, how he is determined to go to Baltimore the next day to reach the 17th Connecticut from that city, writing "
I suppose the regiment is some 8 miles away from a railroad.... I shall write from Baltimore.... in command of 275 men instead of a Brigade.
"
Noble rejoined his regiment shortly after the battle of Gettysburg was fought and led it during Lee's retreat to Virginia.  In his stead, during the battle Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Fowler commanded the 17th but was killed on July 1st, subsequently Major Allen G. Brady took over command until Noble arrived.
In fine condition, dark ink, Noble ends the letter signing in pencil, hand-sewn pages at edge, light staining.
