Description
Civil War Confederate homemade adversity cover made from strip of three CSA forms for use as a pass to grant soldiers permission to visit specific locations. The middle of the three forms is complete. The cover is addressed to Rev F. R. Goulding, Post Chaplain Macon Georgia, from a Col Aiken. There are three Col Aikens in the American Civil War Historical Database, two from South Carolina and a Lieut Col on the CS (Confederate Staff). Most likely it is either Hugh Aiken or D.Wyatt Aiken.
There is no date so more research would be required to find out when Goulding was assigned to the post headquarters in Macon Georgia that could help pin down the year but not the specific date. The pair of stamps are unevenly cut and some of the cuts intrude into the design in some parts of the pair. They both bear pen cancels but no town is noted.
The contents could have been official business or personal, no way to tell. A wonderful adversity cover worthy of any CSA postal history collection. Very fine.
