Description
Ahand painted
Japanese scroll of a Buddhist monk. It's written using older Japanese from the middle 1800's or before. (My very educated Japanese wife has difficulty reading the older Japanese except "It's Buddhist".)
What we find striking is the skill the artist was able to show in the monks expression.
He's holding a monks bowl but look into his eyes. There's a story there.
This was painted by the artist with sumi ink and a brush. There is no room for mistakes using ink. Only the skill of the artist. This is from Kyoto, Japan.
The weighted ends are lightly lacquered wood. There are age spots towards the top with a close up in the fifth and sixth photos.
It's 80 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches (204 x 45 cm)
The painting itself, The "Honshi" is 55 x 13 1/2 inches (140 x 34 cm)
