Description
Nicely I.D.ed CdV of William Sprague, Rhode Island officer & GovernorAn excellent CdV image of Sprague in R.I. militia officer’s uniform, no back mark. Accompanied by an 1861 dated letter written by his wife Kate (much more to that story!) sending the photo to another officer’s wife via that officer, a Colonel Landau(sp?).
Sprague (1830-1915) lived a life fit for novels. His wealthy father was murdered when William was 13. Inheriting the family fortune at 26, he was elected governor of Rhode Island in 1859. One of the first to answer Lincoln's call for troops. He fought valiantly in the Battle of Bull Run, First Manassas. Resigning as governor in 1863 to become a U.S. senator, the same year he married Kate Chase, daughter of Salmon P. Chase. The "Panic of 1873" wiped out his family's wealth, and his marriage ended in divorce after Kate's affair with New York Senator Roscoe Conkling. Sprague remarried and retired to his Rhode Island estate. In 1909, Canonchet burned and he spent his final years in Paris, dying September 11, 1915.
