    Letter (Not Dated) written by General James Barnet Fry (1827-1894) to Mrs. John D. Townsend stating that he would not be able to attend the Lady Washington's reception.  Written on his personal stationary.
    JAMES BARNET FRY - Civil War Brigadier General served as General Irvin McDowell's Chief of Staff during the first Bull Run Campaign, and Chief of Staff of the Army of the Cumberland in its operations of the western theater which included the Battle of Shiloh.  He was appointed Provost Marshal General of the entire Union Army, a capacity he served to the end of the war.
