Some excerps from the letter are
I spake to ye a bit two of the Secesh prisoners are as dead as the Divel and we planted them
on the island about 4-1/2 feet deep
There is soon to be a move on Charlston or Sanannah. Don't think we may move yet but possibly may go
first the fact is we have been ahead of all of the fighting to do and some narrow escapes
You ought to hear the boys swear how the Dam Officers Dam Stars & Stripes wish the Secesh would come
when we was out to work and kill every Dam Officer, take the fort and raise hell
Generally the Regt is in high anticipation of being home th 4th of July
I see by the papers the Capt Sanford is at home. He is one of the finest Officers in the world since Col Terry
has been promoted. We begin to like war he is a man every inch of him they all like him where the men go he goes
and always goes on foot with us. I have marched 12 miles & skirmished 12 of it through swamps woods cotton

At the end of the letter he crudly draws a picture of 2 turtles and a fish on the hook
