Oct 28th 1862 Civil War Letter 7th Ct Sherman DivisionCivil War letter dated Oct 28th1862 from Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Ct Vols Sherman Division
Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Reg Company A was from Meriden Ct and was mustered in on Sept 5, 1861
Letter is 4 pages long and is written from Hilton Head South Carolina
Writing to his brother from Hilton Head
Some excerps from the letter with complaints on the war are
We buried Wm Harrison of Southington yesterday Died of Yellow fever sick about two days
Two mor men died that were sick Pratt brother of R P Pratt firm of Staples & Pratt where I used to work in Hartford
The other was Vinton of East Hartford wounded at James Island
We had a row with the Grey Coats again a fight as was a fight sincew I wrote you a letter we have been
down in Florida rising up things. Down there they run and we did a big thing opened up St Johns River
and took many supplies. When we returned Gen Mitchell made us a speech said we had done all he could ask of us
The Rebel run for us & he had another small job for us & I hoped they would not run this time & I swear he got his wish
They stood and fought like Devils they fired on our skirmishers at 20 minutes before onoe and then it begun & we fought till
dark & fought every inch of ground for 3 miles Night came and we out of ammunition for the last two hours our artillery used
the Rebel powder & iron upon them the infantry were obliged to stop firing for we had only 10 rounds apiece to defend our
retreat of 8 miles away from the gun boeats they are so afraid of horse flesh here that they won't risk a load of ammunition
without the men can carry ir afraid of loosing an old horse the men after all days fight had to carry our dead & wounded
8 miles on blankets when at the head there are plenty of horses. That is the way the Dam War is carried on dow here
If we had a supply of ammunition we could have destroyedd the R Road Bridge between Charlseton & Savannah easy
We might have taken more artillery & cavalry but as it was they was afraid of hrs flesh & means of convenience for the dead & wounded
Rather make the men do itwe had one Sergt killed one man wounded was allother Cos suffered more but we took it
At James Island last June there we had 19 men killed & wounded at one shot you will see what the flank Cos of the 7th can do
There were 2 Rebel 10 pounders playing into our division with terrible effect fairly mowing down our men & our men could not get out
Gen Terry ordered boys of the 7th Sharps Rifles forward to silence those guns & at that time not over 35 men in each Co
but up we went double quick our lines opened for us til we were in front of the whole. Then work begun luckey for us the
first fire of thier 10 pounder of grape cannister went over our heads harmless then at it we kept a consatnt stream
of blaze from opur rifles in less than 10 minutes we had silenced both guns. Not a man could get to the guns to load them
and ourDam Calvery never rushed on which they might & cut them all to pieces and save the guns
They dared ont and the Rebs took things we left them was oliged to leave them forthey were reinforced in no time & we no ammunition
But itis all the same or we might had a horse killed & then that is a loss to government and a few men are not
Measures 8" x 10" and then folded to make 4 pages
