Description
OLD COLLECTION OF CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC COVERS SLAVERY, ABOLITION, SECESSION, LINCOLN, ELLSWORTH, ETC.About ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY (130) old patriotic illustrations, political cartoons, etc., CUT-OFF original Civil War era envelopes and PASTED onto the pages of an old scrapbook. The name of the collector(?) is written in ink on the first page:
J. Thomas Scruggs
Elkton, Virginia
This was probably J. Thomas Scruggs (1912-1994) of Harrisonburg, son of James Preston and Nannie Dickerson Scruggs. He owned and managed Scruggs and Co., a department store in Elkton for many years.
This collection of patriotic illustrations cut-off the front of Civil War envelopes, has an average of four items GLUED onto the FRONT & REVERSE of 17 pages. Thus there are 34 pages of items in all when counting the front & reverse of each of the seventeen pages.
At some point, the old scrapbook pages of the collection were re-bound into black marbled-board covers (see scan below).
This rebound book of covers has since been broken at the binding and many pages removed (see scan below).
The actual original old scrapbook pages have some chips and tears along their right edges, and the paper is somewhat wrinkled, but are otherwise in good condition. Most of the 130 cut-down patriotic covers are in good condition, but there are a few that are scraped or torn (see scan below).
Many of these old Civil War covers are quite colorful, and their themes are humorous & satirical commentary on the national "issues of the day" -- mostly circa 1861-1862 such as:
-Secession & disunion,
-Abolition & African American slavery,
-The Confederacy / Confederate States of America (CSA),
-Abraham Lincoln,
-Jefferson Davis,
-Gen. Winfield Scott,
-CSA Gen. L. T. Wigfall,
-CSA Gen P. G. T. Beauregard,
Also, two attractive & colorful pages are almost entirely devoted to the martyred Union hero --
-COLONEL ELMER ELLSWORTH.
There are many illustrated subjects, including:
Lady Liberty, flags, eagles, snakes & serpents, shields, soldiers including Zouaves, ships, cannon, gallows, the Devil, skull & crossbones, dogs, buffalo, the "Comet of 1861," & MUCH MORE.
Most of the covers appear to be PRO-UNION / Anti-Confederacy.
The scan below shows the broken re-binding and ALL THE PAGES of this interesting old collection:
