Original Nov. 23, 1863 letter to Sister Anna from Bro. Manly Leiby of the 114th. O.V.I. from Stint Louis Gen. Hospital - " Dear Sister Anna, it is with much pleasure I sit down to ans your good letters under date Oct. 25th and 28 which you sent by Hoffman and Sulze which I received last thursday and friday and I tell you I was glad to hear that you were getting along so well. I also received the things you sent and I thank you a thousand times for them. I was very sorry to hear the sad news of Henry Stanley's death but he looked awful bad when he started, And another thing when he started he didn't take any medicine with him. I sent my money and a letter to you by him and he owed me four dollars that I had lent him in Camp. I heard from the Regiment last night they are just across the river from here at Algiers. They came from brashier City yesterday morning - They are going to draw new tents and close be fore they leave there. There were two of Co. A Boys here last evening. They say they never saw the boys in as good spirits as they are at present. The Regt. has been filled up considerably since the furloughed men have come back there is over two hundred men in it now. I expect some of our company will be here today to see me. Edward Mearshal was here to see me last thursday and I tell you I was glad to see him and talk with him about home and learn how things was going on. He told me that Jake had taken up with his wife again. Ed said Jake would have died if hadnt. There is a man in our ward with snakes in his boots and he hollars and talks so much after night we can hardly sleep for him. Oh ! what wont whiskey do. I tell you it is the ruin of a many a young man in this Army. I have read my little testament through that you gave me since I've been here and commenced it again. I was paid off on the thirdteenth of this month and I will send home tomorrow if I can get a pass and am going to have my photograph taken and send it to you. A.J. Hoagland is sick in Corps. Hospital. I will try and go to see him tomorrow if I get out. It is awful lonesome in this Hospital. I do wish the time would soon come that I would be well and get back to the Co, I would like very much to see Brother Willie with his new suit on. We have got our fourth Dr, in this ward today since I've been here which is three months today. I wrote you, Mother, Mary and Fannie last week. I must ans, Brother Willie's letter in a few days. Etc, Etc. Your affectionate Brother, etc. "Please view scans for condition and E- mail any questions.
