    Description

    HENRY EDWARD YOUNG
    (1831-1918) was Judge Advocate General on the staff of Robert E. Lee. He was educated at the University of Berlin in what was then Prussia.  Young had the rank of first lieutenant in the South Carolina Militia during the Civil War. He was promoted to captain in September 1861 and served with Generals Drayton, Jones, Longstreet and Anderson before becoming Judge Advocate General. He was promoted to Major in 1864.
    Young saw action during all the campaigns of Virginia and at Antietam and Gettysburg and he was with Lee at Appomattox.
    After the war, he became a partner with Benjamin Huger Rutledge in the law firm of Rutledge and Young.
    Offering a one-page, ALS, 5 ¾ x 7 ½, from his law office, “Please send me a statement of your costs in Miller vs. Hughes…”  The costs for recipient has written the costs at the bottom.
