Sept 23rd 1862 Civil War Letter 7th Ct Sherman Division
Civil War letter dated Sept 23rd1862 from Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Ct Vols Sherman Division
Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Reg Company A was from Meriden Ct and was mustered in on Sept 5, 1861
Letter is 4 pages long and is written from Hilton Head South Carolina
Writing to his brother from Hilton Head
Some excerps from the letter with many comments agains the North are
Last night we heard the news that a large lot of our men were taken prisoners at Harpers Ferry
together with a quanity of Arms & Ammunition said to be correct news hope to God tis so
Hope the whole Army of Virginnia will be taken prisoners. Hope the next news that we get that
is correct will be that the Confederate Capital is changed from Richmond to Washington then
some of these Northern Tories Traitors won't blister their asses sitting around Washington robing
government as they have done and are doing more now that ever. The rebels are gaining ground every day hope
they will keep on God Speed then I wish they could get every one of our leading Officers
I think then this war would end talk about Jeff Davis being a Traitor Hell he is an Angel compared to nine
tenths of our army and leading men of the North
It is a discrace to the North to fight the South for a whole year and then can't whip them
I think Lincoln better call home his Babies and let them Suck and let the South alone and ask Jeff Davis
for forgiveness and ask him to protect the North and send us cotton to make gloves for our Army to wear
in war time fancy War. White gloves and fancy shoes won't whip the South
We have a new General here in place of the N----r worshiper Hunter. He has gone but his Dam N-----s ain't gone
We are under marching orders. Going to Florida up St Johns River above Jacksonville to raise the Devil or something
We held Jacksonville once but now the Rebels have it. We have not hardly men enough to hold this place now
Two or three Regs are going to get whipt unless we have plenty of gunboats. It is said that 6 boats are going with us
Generally only one goes and we get the worst of it
I don't care a cuss which way it goes only if the Rebels lick us every time we shall let them alone as we ought to
better a Dam Sight call home our troops than keep an Army for a few Dam Officers to pull around and rob government
of all it ever had besides killing of men by the thousand every day as they are doing
Measures 8" x 10" and then folded to make 4 pages
